This module gives an insight into the topic of leadership and supports students to identify their leadership style, how they demonstrate this style and the various  communication techniques available to resolve issues faced by today’s leader.

Entry to this course is by direct application to the college. There are no previous academic requirements.

Class Sizes

We are committed to ensuring you gain the most, academically and personally, during your study time with Portobello.  To facilitate this, we limit our class sizes to a maximum of 14 students on part-time programmes. With these uniquely small classes, we create the environment for you get to know everyone in your group, you can then feel comfortable and confident to ask questions and our tutors have the time to attend to the needs of each and every student. Many of our students tell us of the lifelong friendships they have made during their study time with Portobello.

Assignment Support

We understand the challenge of completing assignments at third level, the new skills and the change in thinking sometimes needed to put on paper, all that you have learned. We offer our students the opportunity to submit a draft assignment for informal feedback before submitting the final version. We care about your success, we want you to achieve the best you can and we offer you the individual support to acquire the skills you need to communicate what you have learned whilst studying with Portobello Institute.

Course Structure

This part time course is delivered one evening a week over 10 weeks

Course Content Modules

A summary of the content covered during this module;

•    Analyse the role of leadership over time, understand its impact on past and current events
•    Evaluate leadership styles and roles, in public and private context to include leadership dilemmas, the need for leadership, the impact of personal and public ethics, morals and values.
•    Develop a personal leadership plan to include strengths and areas for improvement
•    Understand effective communication skills in the role of leadership including oral presentation and active listening, giving feedback, written documents.
•    Problem solving including strategic analysis of issues or problems, action plans, execution and evaluation of action plans
•    Handling group dynamics, to include facilitating the different roles people play, conflict resolution, teamwork and motivating others.

Further Study

This module is part of the QQI Level 6 Major Award (6M4587) in Management and contributes 15 credits towards achieving this award. Learners can study this programme as a single award or can use it towards the 120 credits required for the major award.
