Conflict situations are an everyday part of business and an important aspect of the workplace. Different stakeholders may have different priorities and often conflict arises as a result of the varying perceptions of stakeholders. However if managed correctly, conflict can represent an opportunity for improvement. By understanding and applying the various conflict resolution techniques in a managed manner, the result of conflict can be increased stakeholder engagement and coherent motivation for success for the organisation.

Entry to this course is by direct application to the college. There are no previous academic requirements.


Course Structure

This part time course is delivered one evening a week over 10 weeks

Course Content Modules

•    Understand the functions and form of conflict in a group and organisation
•    Understand the dimensions of conflict management and conflict resolution, the differences and similarities between them
•    Methods and strategies for managing conflict problems including solving, negotiating, passive, smoothing approach, adversarial approach, compromising, withdrawal and avoidance
•    Role, function and styles of mediation and negotiation in managing conflict
•    Methods used to intervene in a conflict situation in a group and/or organisational life
•    Assess strengths and weaknesses of personal style in managing conflict

Further Study

This module is part of the QQI Level 6 Major Award (6M4587) in Management and contributes 15 credits towards achieving this award. Learners can study this programme as a single award or can use it towards the 120 credits required for the major award.
