Becoming an effective manager requires practical skills, knowledge and experience across a range of topics. This programme is ideal for the newly appointed manager, the aspiring manager or the self-employed manager who seeks to enhance their skills, gain a deeper knowledge and practice the tools of management in today’s dynamic business environment.  

This is a full QQI major award at level 6 with 8 modules in total. The purpose of this award is to enable the learning of the theory, principles and practice of management to be applied in a range of contexts. This programme prepares the learner to work independently in a management capacity and/or to progress to management studies in higher education.

Entry Requirement

Entry to this course is by direct application to the college. There are no previous academic requirements.



Course Structure

This part time course is divided into 3 semesters with classes running for a total period of 30 weeks. Each semester is 10 weeks in duration with 2 modules covered during each semester, there is a break between semesters to allow students time to complete final assignments. Modules have been grouped according to the theme so students may maximise their research opportunity and apply their knowledge and learning to both modules simultaneously.  

Communications and Work experience modules are completed by blended learning and participants must attend 2 Saturdays to complete these modules. Workshops are held in Portobello Institute, Dublin 1. Candidates must book into a workshop in advance by contacting  Students have up to 6 months to complete the blended learning modules after the date of the final module.

Business Management - 6N4310

•    Organisation types, mission, vision, purpose, objectives and structures
•    Internal and external analysis including PEST and SWOT analysis frameworks4
•    Explore the role of business management in planning, organising, motivating and monitoring, review and control
•    Explore the difference between management and leadership and the impact of the different styles on group and individual performance
•    Appraise the role of the human resources function to recruit, select and appraise employees and resolve conflict
•    Design a workflow system for a business related task to include documentation of process, identification of responsibilities and expected outputs.
•    Evaluate the performance of an individual or group using objectives, key performance indicators and performance appraisal systems

Strategic Business Planning - 6N4105

•    Evaluating the market opportunity, market size and segments, customer behaviour and potential target markets
•    Financial Planning - uses of funds, cash flow and specifics of laying our financial statements specific to a business plan
•    Understanding funding mechanism available, applying for and securing finance and investment
•    Developing effective marketing, quality control and customer service polices
•    Developing communication skills to present and communicate a strategic business plan

Managing People - 6N3945

•    Perform effectively in a supervisory management role, recognising the importance of self-management and being a positive role model.
•    Managing Performance - understand how to identify and agree performance standards, manage under-performance and deviation from agreed standards in a manner that achieves a positive outcome.

Employment Law - 6N4322

•    Principal features of a contract of employment and the various terms contained within, including understanding the difference between a contract of service and a contract for services.
•    Understand employee rights including minimum wages, minimum notice, leave entitlements, terms of employment and employer and employee duties under common law
•    Evaluate individual employment rights concepts including discrimination, maternity, adoptive and parental leave, part-time and fixed term work, agency work, payment of wages, organisation of working time, pensions, health and safety, equality and privacy.
•    Understand the main provisions of the current Unfair Dismissals legislation, Constitutional and European Rights of employees and the procedure for taking a claim under legislation for unfair dismissals.
•    Identify Dispute Resolution mechanisms including the role and function of industrial relations bodies
•    Explore the main provisions of Safety, Health and Welfare legislation as it pertains to employers and employees
•    Understand employment rights pertaining to pensions and redundancies
•    Understand the implications of Data Protection and the Freedom of Information legislation in the workplace.
