Specialised Cosmetic Skills

At Portobello Institute we have developed and tailored our beauty courses to be career focused to meet the demands of a continually growing industry

This enables our students to enter into the workplace with a high level of competence in the theory and practical elements of the relevant qualification.

We have been delivering Beauty courses at Portobello Institute since 1993, most of our courses are ITEC accredited. ITEC has continued to develop the examination system which sets the highest standards in quality and education. The qualifications are supported by industry professionals and are easily transportable nationally and internationally.

Our aim is that you gain valuable knowledge in your chosen course in an open and relaxed environment. We are passionate about learning here and preparing our students with the confidence and ability to work in the area. Portobello Institute's beauty department is very unique as we operate a live "pop up" salon from our beauty therapy rooms. This salon is run by our current students carrying out the treatments they are learning in class. This salon allows the students to develop key skills such as listening to the client, client care, interaction, time management and estimating correct treatment timings. The tutors are always on hand in the Live Salon to help build up student confidence and speed- skills that are essential when entering the salon/spa industry. The Live Salon experience makes for a very smooth transition from student to professional beauty therapist.

Here's what some of our clients from the Live Salon has said-

Pam Quinn - Make up and Beauty Blogger; " I recently attended the college for a facial and massage. As soon as myself and my friends arrived we were greeted by Fiona one of the tutors there. I was then introduced to my student therapist who was extremely professional and friendly and instantly put me at ease. She went through a questionnaire regarding any skin allergies or health issues she needed to be aware of. I have mild Cerebral Palsy which can affect how I walk, but she was very kind and helped me getting to the therapist bed. She talked me through what to expect from the facial and really knew her stuff. She did the facial and massage exactly how I had asked for it - it was so relaxing and professional. I slept so well after the massage and my skin was clear and glowed for days. I would highly recommend Portobello's live pop up salon, it's great for clients and also a brilliant experience and opportunity for the students studying there".

Aisling King -"I was greeted very professionally and asked all medical questions discreetly. The atmosphere was relaxed and yet fun with plenty of interesting conversation".

Paula Moore - "The student that looked after me had a very gentle yet firm touch. The creams used were amazing and I noted that despite it being a class for the training of students I was treated to the same standard of facial if not better than a spa".

Olivia Dowdall - "I went to Portobello's live pop up salon for a manicure and pedicure, I found the experience uplifting and relaxing. I had a lovely French manicure done and a paraffin wax pedicure which was truly heaven. I have decided from having the paraffin wax pedicure that this will be a treatment I will look into having on a regular basis".

We also bring industry experts in to speak with our students; we were delighted to have Dermalogica come in recently. Read about their visit here. We update our blog regularly, keep an eye on it to see what our students have been up to during and after their studies.
