Here at Portobello Institute, we place great emphasis on both practical and employable skills, which can often be difficult to teach in the classroom! For our Sports Therapy graduates, working as a therapist in a clinical setting requires deep appreciation of professional conduct and interpersonal skills to ensure that the client is treated with care that is second to none. To enable our sports therapy students to grow as professional and develop as practitioners we run a Student Sports Clinic every Thursday evening.

The Clinic is open to the public and clients book ahead to receive both assessment and treatment. The Clinic environment requires our students to take responsibility for clinic equipment, client booking, client consultations, client treatments and rehabilitation plans. We find that the structured clinic environment allows students to gain confidence and competence in their ability to work professionally and independently under the guidance of our supervising therapist.

During the clinic students work in pairs; the student therapist provides consultation, differential diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation planning (if required) whilst the student observer takes notes on the clinical decision making, treatment techniques and alternative approaches. After the clients depart from the Clinic all students and the clinic supervising therapist present and discuss their cases to engage in reflective problem-based learning.

We are delighted to be able to share some feedback from our current Sports Therapy Students on their experiences working in the Student Sports Clinic:

“The clinic is much more practical learning. You get used to working with lots of different clients in a clinical environment”.

“Clinic time is focused and everyone is engaged in developing their skills”.

“We get a chance to work independently as well as getting feedback and reporting to the clinic supervisor so we get to use our strengths and work on our weaknesses”

“It feels very professional because we are treating clients from start to finish”.

We offer sports therapy at Portobello Institute as integrated 3 year degree programmes with a mix of lectures, tutorials, practical classes and laboratory based sessions. We have extensive dedicated and experienced team of academic advisors, programme managers and tutors in place to support every student throughout their educational journey to degree level.
