Montessori teaching is a process whereby children learn through exploration and experience in a child centred environment. There are no set grades, tests or competition. Montessori schools encourage children of different ages to work together, with younger children learning through observation from their older peers in a vertical learning environment.

The Montessori Method places great importance on the strong development of social skills where Montessori schools ultimately teach children how to be courteous, polite, and respectful according to the customs of their local culture. Montessori allows us to experience a child’s uniqueness in their choices, actions and desires. It demonstrates their overall development in a carefully prepared and non traditional environment. The 5 key principles of the Montessori method include:

Independence – Independence is the greatest gift that we can give a child. When children learn to do things independently they develop self belief, esteem and confidence. They also develop a sense of achievement in their own accomplishments.

Observation – Only through observation of the child can we witness their interests and desires. This is an essential teaching tool in Montessori, as it allows us to tailor our teaching methods to the desires and interests of the child.

Following the child –This is a key principle of the method. Rather than the conventional teaching method of the adult deciding what the child must learn, in Montessori we present the child with several options and we follow where their interests lead.

Control of Error – All Montessori material has an inbuilt control of error which allows the child to see when they have made a mistake. This ensure that the child can self correct rather than constantly receiving correction from an adult.

A prepared environment – Montessori rooms are all lovingly set up and prepared always with the child in mind. Everything is child sized and at a child’s level. This ensures that classroom truly is a place for children where they can feel safe and free to explore and learn.

We have included some of our students favourite Maria Montessori quotes and materials showing its true importance:

“Never help a child with a task at which he feels he can succeed."
"The child is both a hope and a promise for mankind."
"The essence of independence is to be able to do something for one’s self.”
